Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be reachable for appointment on the Civil Service eligible list for Engineer Trainee (Civil/Transportation) or Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation) OR candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service in a title eligible for transfer under the provisions of Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Candidates must provide proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND obtain a qualifying bachelor’s degree or higher as listed below;
Or must provide proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.
Qualifying Degrees:
A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering; Civil Engineering Technology; Construction Engineering; Construction Engineering Technology; Construction Engineering Management Technology; Geological Engineering; Geotechnical Engineering; Hydraulics Engineering; Materials Engineering; Materials Science and Engineering; Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; Structural Engineering; Transportation Engineering or Transportation Planning and Engineering
Qualifying Experience:
One year of full time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures or traffic management safety systems.
Duties Description
The Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation) incumbent would report to the Regional Canal Engineers or their designee and, under the close supervision of higher level staff, perform the following engineering and engineering related duties:
• Working collaboratively with Asset Management, Inspection, Dam Safety, and Maintenance personnel to plan, design, implement, and oversee maintenance and construction work.
• Assessing and determining the required scope of work for various civil, electrical, mechanical, and environmental projects.
• Preparing reports, plans, and details to support various maintenance and construction projects.
• Detailed work planning that determines the labor, material, and equipment necessary for work crews to perform tasks and projects.
• Determining the required sequencing of work phases for projects and creating resource loaded work schedules including CPM schedules when necessary.
• Preparing specifications and other detailed requirements for the work tasks.
• Estimating the cost of planned work and monitoring the cost during the construction phase.
• Assist in procuring materials, equipment, and services.
• Field work necessary to assess future work, perform quality assessment of work performed or underway, and assist in resolving unexpected field conditions.
• Overall responsibility for work order management in Maximo including creation of work orders, editing work orders, planning and scheduling work orders and completing work orders; also responsible for coordinating with Division Planner/Schedulers and Division Engineers in work order management.
• Statewide collaboration with other planners and Canal Management.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
