Mostly a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering is required as a formal education for civil engineer. In the quest of how to become a Civil Engineer, you are required to have extraordinary skills to create buildings and structures in addition to being creative in designing processing plants, warehouses and other public structures. You should be a specialist in hydraulic engineering, structural engineering and transportation engineering. 

If you are a fresh engineer without any experience, there is a certification course of “engineer-trainee” and “professional engineer” for engineers who have a few years experience. There are many civil engineers who hold official certification of being Professional Engineer. Civil engineers who are involved in providing services to the general public are required to have a license. There were a total of about 1.5 million jobs for engineers in the year 2006 in US, of which civil engineers had a major share of 256,000.  

Prior experience is a pre-requisite for a Civil Engineer to accomplish its tasks successfully. You must have practical experience of on-site working and facing the actual problems. In field or site, you can take advantage of various reference books and internet facility. As per evaluation of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be a growth of 18 percent in civil engineering industry which will add 46,000 more jobs in this field which is likely to be the largest increase in the engineering industry. Today most of the modern projects require a civil engineer to possess a Master’s degree.

Generally the entry level post of a civil engineer is with lower responsibility of working as assisting hands to senior level design engineers. In order to gain experience and responsibility, civil engineers move from one organization to another in government and private sectors.

Minimum salary of a civil engineer as per Bureau of Labor Statistics was $75,320 during 2007. Civil engineers in the state government and local government had incomes of $67,880 & $84,030 respectively. There was an annual income seen by civil engineers working in architectural and other related services saw annual income of $84,030.
