High grades in science and mathematics are essential to get in. Furthermore, good grades in social studies and English and strong computer skills are extremely important. Since this is a position where working with others is unavoidable, strong people skills are overall appreciated.
Team work is an everyday thing here and all aspects of communication need to be employed. Analytical qualities are also appreciated because without that no project can be finished successfully.
Even at entry level, how much a civil engineer in a civil construction job makes depends largely on his education. Those who have a bachelor’s degree earn about the same as those who have a master’s degree. With a PhD, however the pay is about 50 percent higher for the same work. Those with the lowest education accepted in this position and no considerable experience may still make over $40,000 per year. A PhD and ten years’ experience easily brings the salary up to above $100,000 per year.
